An American Myth

There iz No Place Like Home!

In the movie of the Wizard Of Oz, Dorothy bumped her head during a tornado (a whirlwind) and fell into a dream. In her dream she dreamt her house was taken up into the tornado and it fell back to Earth in a far distance land, away from her previous home and family. All the characters she was about to meet in her unconscious state correlated with people she knew in Kansas.

It so happened that when Dorothy’s house landed back on Earth it fell on the Wicked Witch of the East killing her instantly. This could be seen as some of Dorothy’s own fears being released from her past and future--her yesterdays and tomorrows. The energy which was previously being used to worry about the past or future was freed up, and Dorothy was given perfect understanding, which iz symbolized by a pair of ruby red slippers. These slippers gave her the understanding that protected her during the whole journey by bringing her into a sharp focus of the present moment. The purpose of Dorothy’s journey was to go back home to Kansas, and this could only be achieved if she could reawaken from her unconscious dream sleep.

On the road home her first task was to meet parts of herself and realign her own capacities. So Dorothy gathered herself up by uncovering and discovering her mind body (the Scarecrow), her heart body (the Tinman) and her spirit body (the Lion). Dorothy had self-doubt about being able to get back home. Her doubts and fears gave sustenance to the Wicked Witch of the West. The Wicked Witch fed off these doubts and fears to feed her own power. The Witch plagued Dorothy throughout her whole experience of gathering herself together. The energy of Dorothy’s doubts and fears was usurped to her own demise as the Wicked Witch cast her spells by setting the Scarecrow on fire, rusting the Tinman and scaring the Lion. Let’s not forget to mention Dorothy being given poppies, creating the experience of being asleep within her dream.

As the Witch’s spells began to take hold in an effort to steal the power of understanding from Dorothy’s ruby red slippers, things reached a point where it looked like all was lost. Just like a Hollywood film, in a last ditch attempt to save the whole situation, Dorothy instinctively picked up a bucket of water to save the burning Scarecrow and accidently threw some on the Witch. Water iz a symbol of truth and the true symbol of truth iz light. You can ask any Sun in the sky: it’s truth iz light. When the light was thrown (or, should we say shone) on the black Witch, it dispelled the darkness--just like the Sun does every day. Once these fears had been dispelled, Dorothy became quite confident in herself as all her "inner" friends were in one accord in one place.

Dorothy now was allowed an audience with the Wizard of Oz. Who iz the Wizard of Oz, we might ask.? That’s a good question. To answer it, it depends on who is asking. If you think yourself rich in any way, then you are rich. Or, if you think yourself poor in some way, you receive what you think yourself to be. Whatever level of perception you focus on iz the level of perception that returns to you. The word wizard means wise one. OZ can be seen as the letters which symbolize the measurement of precious metals like gold and silver in ounces. Also, the O in OZ can be interpreted as the first number in our numerical system: the zero; and in the English language the Z iz the last letter of the alphabet. By looking at OZ in this way--the first number and the last letter as one--it signifies the union of all numbers and words which form creation.

It has been said that money makes the world go round. (If you can believe that!) One way of looking at the Wizard of Oz iz the wise use of money and the power that it brings. Why does our currency lose value on a continuous basis? Why do people buy and sell each other with money? Why do people say money iz the root of all evil? What iz really behind our money? What’s backing it up? We know it’s no longer gold and silver. That land of Oz iz gone. We now have to fall back on the integrity of our word and the honesty of what has real value and meaning. Iz our word sound and are our numbers accurate? Since gold and silver no longer back our currency, it is the veracity of our word and real values that in the end make the human world turn.

In the film the "Wizard of Oz" Dorothy shook in fear as she met the Wizard in his world on his terms. Yet when she looked him straight in the eyes she had the power to look through him. This was revealed when Toto pulled back the curtain so everyone could see that the Wizard of this dream world was a fake. Once Dorothy had dissolved all her fears and illusions, she was ready to awaken from her dream. Because she had the ruby red slippers on all along she had the power and knowledge to wake up and go home. So, she tapped her feet together three times and said the magic words There iz no place like home. There iz no place like home. There iz no place like home... and the bubble of that dream world burst, transporting her home instantly like magic. Dorothy being awake knew deep in her heart that she had lots to be thankful for.
